We explore why DeepSeek's training methods and cost-efficiency have stirred up such a reaction. However, despite its apparent benefits, we highlight serious privacy concerns about DeepSeek's data retention policies and its legal implications under Chinese law. We particularly advise educators against using the tool due to its potential violation of FERPA and the unsettling practice of retaining user data even after account deletion.
